Myopia (also known as nearsightedness) is becoming increasingly common in children. Unfortunately, childhood cases of myopia often become more severe as children age. Without treatment, even a relatively mild case of myopia in childhood could evolve into a severe case by the time your child reaches adulthood, resulting in thick glasses or a dependence on contact lenses.
Myopia control is a type of physical therapy for your eyes and is designed to slow down the progression of myopia. Early intervention is crucial to preserving your child’s distance vision and keeping their prescription from climbing.
Vaughan Family Vision Care is proud to offer myopia control treatments. For more information about myopia control for your child request an appointment today.
One reason myopia progresses is because of visual fatigue and regular stress on the eye. Myopia control treatments exercise the eye muscles, allowing for small changes to the eye’s overall structure or focusing process and reducing strain.
There are two main methods for myopia control:
Though regular glasses will improve your child’s distance vision they can actually make it harder for your child’s eyes to focus on things up close, causing strain. Multifocal glasses and contact lenses, however, are made so that different areas of the lens feature different corrective powers. This in turn allows your child’s eyes to see both up close and far away, without having to work so hard to switch between focal points.
Ortho-K lenses are a special type of rigid contact lens. They are designed to be worn overnight, and will gently reshape your child’s cornea as he or she sleeps. Over time this reshaping will gradually correct your child’s myopia. In the morning your child removes the lenses, and their corneas will maintain their new shape throughout the day, letting your child see clearly without having to wear glasses.
